Get Away…

Someone encouraged me recently to take a day, an afternoon, a few hours and get away from it all. Take some time to reflect to fast to listen to pray…making sure the time spent is long enough till you start to get bored and uncomfortable. I did that today and it made me wonder why I get so busy and full of stress and concern when there is so much joy in simple pleasures. It took me awhile to become aware of how beautiful it was outside today, that the sun felt amazing on my face, that the breeze was full of music from hundreds of birds, that the air smelled of pine trees. Slowly but surely my defenses came down and I had a moment of clarity. And stress was replace with joy and gratitude. It was just a simple moment but it has refreshed my soul.

I guess with all the conveniences of modern life, with 24 hour entertainment, and non-stop schedules we get in such a specific trajectory, a continuous momentum that we literally need to be awakened from it all in order to take in the simple things that God has created to keep us sane and alive. These things are all around us but unless we are in tune with it, we can miss the profound as it becomes drowned out by the mundane.

I’ll pass on this advice, take a break this week-make sure it’s long enough for you to get bored and uncomfortable. :)

Just wanted to encourage you in your music. Keep making it for the One who gave you the gift in the first place!!!

  2. Thanks Rebekah…

  3. Sometimes slowing down for me makes things more stressful ’cause all I think about are the things that need to be done.

    Hope you feel refreshed!

  4. I agree, that’s how it is for me too, but I think there’s something to the idea of embracing that…truly letting your mind freak out and then in the aftermath there can be clarity…We are so unused to peace that our minds and bodies don’t know what to do with it….but life can’t just be a non-stop rat race to death…life is beautiful and certain moments were meant to be savored!!

  5. Dude, there’s nothing like running a piece of heavy equipment for 12 uninterrupted hours to make time stand still!

I lead musicless worship at our church this past week. I’ve been leading their long enough for people to trust me, but silence is one of the disciplines that some people are just so uncomfortable with. I think “be still and know that I am God” is one of God’s most profound instructions to us.

This is WAY of topic, but could you put up the lyrics for your new song “Come Back Around”? I tried to find them online and failed terribly…Thanks!

  8. Sure:

    “Come Back Around”

When your heroes have all let you down
And you find that your faith is unsound
Come to me dear, with your broken heart
When the thorn will not fall from your side
You’ve waited too long and life’s passed you by
Come to me dear, with your broken heart

You’re not the only one who’s been let down
What would it take for you to come back around
    Come back around

When the words that had changed you for good
    Turned out to be misunderstood
Come to me dear, with your broken heart

You’re not the only one who’s been let down
What would it take for you to come back around
    Come back around
You’re not the only one who’s been let down
What would it take for you to come back around
    Come back around
When your heroes have all let you down
And you find that your faith is unsound
Come to me dear, with your broken heart

  9. You’re so right. I’ve been at Bible College for almost a year, and if I had to pick one thing that I have found the most beneficial it would be learning to pray and fast properly. There is an intimacy that slips in on you unannounced, and it’s very sweet. Something about the way the Lord speaks when fasting makes it seem more tender and soft than usual, but also sharper and clearer. I love that the King of Glory, who created time and fashioned the human heart, stars and elbows, spirits and green tea loves to be intimate with me. When I break a fast I somehow feel a little bit bereft - His presence isn’t as tangible - but there is always something brighter from it.
